In short
Your game progress stays on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to play with friends online. Then only a nickname you pick, your best results and their ghosts are kept on our server, so your friends can race you. We never sell or share it, and you can delete it in the game at any time.
What the game keeps, and where
To remember your progress, the game saves the following only on your device, inside the app's own storage:
- your progress: nights flown, lanterns, little ghosts, golden ghosts, trophies, flames and items you unlocked;
- your settings, such as sound, vibration and graphics choices;
- the nickname you can type in, if you choose to (it is optional, and you can leave it blank).
This information stays on your phone. We cannot see it. Uninstalling the app, or using "reset all progress" in the game's settings, deletes it.
Playing with friends online (optional)
Online play is off until you open friends in the game and tap play online. You do not need an account, an email address or a phone number. When you turn it on, our server keeps:
- a random player ID made for this game, and a secret key that proves the ID is yours (we store only a scrambled copy of the key; the key itself stays on your phone);
- your 6-letter friend code;
- the nickname you choose (we refuse rude words). Please pick a nickname that is not your full real name;
- your friend list (friends are added with a code or an invite link, and you can remove them);
- your best result on each night and on each day's daily flight, with its “ghost” (the path Boo flew, so friends can race it) and when it was saved;
- when you last played online (so your friends can see roughly when you last played, and so players who have been away for 12 months can be deleted).
Live races. When you and a friend start a live race, the game sends your position in the race (how far along and how high Boo is) a few times a second, how far you flew when the race ends, and any of the game's preset reactions you tap (like “GG” or “Boo!”; there is no free text). Our server only passes these to the friend you are racing. They are kept in the server's memory, never saved, and are gone within 15 minutes. An invite to race tells that friend your nickname, and only friends can invite you.
Who can see it. Your friends see your nickname, your friend code, your results and your ghosts. The game uses these to show you which friend has the best result on each night, and to tell you when a friend beats one of your best results (and to tell your friends when you beat theirs). In a live race, the friend you race sees where you are as you fly. Your friends also see roughly when you last played online, in whole days (like “played today” or “played 3 days ago”), never the exact time. The daily flight also has a board for everyone, which shows nicknames and distances. Anyone you give your code or invite link to can see your nickname. There is no chat and no way to send messages.
What it is used for. Only to run friends, ghost races, live races, the boards and the news about which friend beat whom. It is not sold, not shared with anyone, not used for ads and not used to build a profile of you.
Your internet address. Like any website, our server sees your phone's internet (IP) address while it answers. It uses it for a moment to stop abuse (too many requests) and does not save it.
Deleting it. In friends, tap delete my online data: your player ID, nickname, friend list, results and ghosts are deleted from our server straight away, and you are removed from your friends' lists. Players who have not played online for 12 months are deleted automatically. If you uninstalled the game without deleting, email us your friend code and we will delete it.
Where and how. The server is run by Prism Technologies. All traffic between the game and the server is encrypted (HTTPS).
What the game does not do
- It does not collect your real name, email, phone number, location, contacts, photos or your phone's device identifiers.
- It does not send anything to us unless you turn on online play (above), and it never sends data to anyone else.
- It does not show ads and does not use analytics or tracking tools.
- It has no accounts, no chat and no way to send messages to other players.
Sharing a night card
After a night you can choose to share a picture of your result. This only happens when you tap the share button, and it uses your phone's own share menu. The picture goes only to the app and person you pick. It contains your result and the nickname shown in the game, nothing else.
Children
Boo Before Dawn is made for players aged 13 and over. Online play is optional, has no chat, and shows other players only a nickname and game results. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has turned on online play, email us their friend code and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of the game changes what it collects (for example if ads are added), we will update this policy before that version is released, and change the version number and date at the top of this page. Version 1.1 added the optional online play with friends. Version 1.2 adds the news when a friend beats your best and your friends' best results on the nights map, and lets your friends see roughly when you last played (in whole days). Version 1.3 adds live races with a friend: race positions and preset reactions are passed between the two players and never saved.
